IDEA Summit
On April 10-11, 2003, Parents Reaching Out (PRO) hosted an Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Summit. The summit was designed to draw parents, advocates, teachers and administrators together to learn more about IDEA and to develop a work plan to address the implementation of IDEA in New Mexico.
Speakers addressed critical issues for folks involved in special education. Keynote speakers and workshop participants discussed community inclusion, parent involvement in the education process, outreach to Native communities and other minority groups and IDEA reauthorization.
Delegates from the many stakeholder groups met before and after the workshops to discuss special education issues. At the end of the summit, delegates developed a work plan to address the critical concerns raised by panelists and members of the special education community. Delegates will continue working on this work plan throughout the year to bring needed changes to special education in New Mexico.
Thanks to PRO for all their hard work to bring the special education community together!
