Task Force Endorses Medicaid Waiver For TBI

A task force of state agency staff, consumers, providers, advocates and family members is recommending the establishment of a Medicaid waiver program for community-based services to persons with traumatic brain injury (TBI).

The task force, which included representation from P&A, was appointed as a result of a legislative memorial sponsored by Rep. Joe Thompson. The Department of Health coordinated the task force and held a series of public hearings around the state to determine needed services and satisfaction levels with current services.

The group confirmed that there is no consistent and reliable source for long term services to persons with TBI. A majority of states fill this gap through a Medicaid waiver program. The group has endorsed a $2 million appropriation which, combined with federal matching funds, could serve approximately 200 persons.
