WHAT IS A REASONABLE ACCOMODATION?

For one of our own P & A employees accommodation is a simple use of typing aids and a "no hands mouse".

Y2K has a significant affect on the operations of P & A. The agency recently underwent a complete
change of computer system equipment for updating and meeting the demands of the new millennium.

With updating the equipment came the need for assistive technology. The new computer network with Windows 98 requires the frequent use of a standard mouse. Not a problem... or is it?? For Vince Montano, senior advocate here at P & A, it surely was! Vince has a bilateral upper extremity amputation. For those of us who know him, he's the guy with NO HANDS.

The computer update at P&A included a direct link to the Internet. Surfing the net, looking for the most current assistive technology, we were able to find a reasonable accommodation. A Person with no hands needs to use this new system without the use of a standard mouse. AaHa! "No Hands Mouse, of course!" That's if fact what Vince now has. He uses his feet, one foot for the operation of the cursor and the other foot for the click operation. Click-click, it's done.
