How to Expand Housing Opportunities for People with Disabilities by Ginny Gilmer

Public housing resources are an essential piece of choice and independence for persons with disabilities. Last year, in New Mexico, the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) sponsored programs brought $32,732,000. In addition the Department of Agriculture and grant sponsored programs brought another $5,000,000.

Right now (during the next six months or so), New Mexico state and local agencies are deciding how to allocate this money among the many who need it. The Mortgage Finance Authority will be holding public hearings throughout the state to receive comments on housing needs in New Mexico. Las Cruces, Albuquerque, and Santa Fe will hold local hearings since their housing money goes directly to the city.

It is VERY IMPORTANT that people with all forms of disabilities participate in this process, let your needs be known. Look for these hearings and news of this funding to come to a location near you. Call the Mortgage Finance Authority (1-800-444-6880 or 843-6880) to find out when hearings are scheduled. The planning departments of each city will know about their hearing schedule. Then, let your needs be heard!

More information about how these housing monies are spent, and how to impact how they are spent, is explained in a document published by the Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities Task Force and the Technical Assistance Collaborative. This publication, "Piecing It All Together in Your Community: Playing the Housing Game" can be downloaded or read on the Internet at www.c-c-d.org/tf-housing.htm. Data about the housing needs of people with disabilities is in another excellent document, "Priced Out in 1998: the Housing Crisis for People with Disabilities." It can be downloaded or read at www.tacinc.org/html/publications/
